About Larimar:
Larimar is the blue gemstone variety of "pectolite" found only in the Dominican Republic. The stone was first discovered in 1916, but the request to mine it was denied due to insufficient evidence of its existence. It wasn't until 1974 that larimar was rediscovered and brought to market after stones had washed ashore on a beach at the foot of the Bahoruco Mountain Range. At the time, natives believed these stones came from the ocean, lending to the name "Larimar"- "mar" from the Spanish word for "sea" and "lari" from "Larissa," the young daughter of the man who formally rediscovered the stone. It was later discovered that stones are a result of volcanic activity.
Larimar jewelry should be worn with care. It ranks a soft 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning it can most safely be worn in pendants and earrings. It is suggested to wear rings made with larimar only on occasion. Clean larimar jewelry with warm, soapy water and a soft bristled toothbrush or jeweler's polishing cloth. Avoid chemical jewelry cleaners.
