We came across this stone in the early 2000's, brilliant and without fracture. Christmas Eve of 2010, a longtime customer and friend found the piece in our store and agreed to purchase it for $2,800 under one condition: that we polish a small nick out of the surface of the stone's table.
It was with this piece that our master lapidarist of over 55 years at the time learned that exceptionally large gemstones like this polish differently than average size stones. Friction-induced heat from the buffing wheel unexpectedly cracked the smoky quartz in our lapidarist's hand, fortunately not breaking or causing serious injury.
Our customer was still quite interested, and they were satisfied by the price reduction. Not six months later, the piece found its way back to us in 2011. We learned that our customer had passed away in an accident. We purchased the stone back from the family, and we held it for over ten years. Today, we are asking the same price that it originally sold for in 2010.
